Frequently asked questions
Plain answers about mutual funds, SIPs, the safety of your money, KYC, tax-saving and how we work with you.
Getting started
How do I get started with ProsperEdge?
Book a free initial consultation online, call us or send a WhatsApp message. We talk about your goals, income, existing investments and comfort with risk. You then get a clear suggestion for next steps, and you decide whether to go ahead.
Is the first consultation really free?
Yes. The first consultation is free, and afterwards you decide whether to invest. It usually takes about 30 minutes and can be in person at our office, online or by phone.
Do I need to live in Pakur to work with you?
No. You are welcome to meet us face to face at our office in Pakur, Jharkhand, but we also work with clients across India, and with NRIs living abroad, by phone, video call and WhatsApp. Your investments are made and managed online.
Can NRIs invest in mutual funds through you?
Yes. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and OCI cardholders living abroad can invest in Indian mutual funds through their NRE or NRO bank account, after completing KYC and a FATCA declaration. Some fund houses accept investments from residents of the USA or Canada only in certain schemes or with extra paperwork, so we check which schemes are open to you before you invest. We can talk by phone, video call or WhatsApp, whichever suits your time zone.
What should I keep ready for the first call?
A rough idea of your monthly income and expenses, any loans, your existing investments and insurance, and the goals you want to plan for. Nothing needs to be perfect. If you decide to invest, you will also need your PAN, Aadhaar and bank details for KYC.
Mutual funds & SIP
What is a mutual fund?
A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it in shares, bonds or other assets according to a stated objective. It is run by a fund house (AMC) and regulated by SEBI. Each investor owns units in proportion to the money they put in.
What is a SIP and how much do I need to start?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month. Many schemes accept SIPs from ₹100 to ₹500 a month; the exact minimum depends on the scheme. You can increase the amount as your income grows.
Try our SIP calculator to see an illustration.
Can I stop or pause my SIP?
Yes. In most schemes you can pause, change or stop a SIP at any time. Money already invested stays invested. Tax-saving ELSS funds are the exception for withdrawals: each instalment is locked in for three years.
Do I need a demat account to invest in mutual funds?
No. Mutual fund units can be held directly with the fund house without a demat account. A demat account is optional.
What is the difference between direct and regular plans?
Every mutual fund scheme has a direct plan and a regular plan. A direct plan is bought straight from the fund house and has a lower expense ratio. A regular plan is bought through a distributor; its expense ratio includes a commission that the fund house pays the distributor. Both plans invest in the same portfolio.
Are mutual fund returns guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns depend on the markets and can go up or down. Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns. Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
Safety of your money & KYC
Is my money safe?
Mutual fund investments are made in your own name, and your money goes directly from your bank account to the fund house. Fund houses are regulated by SEBI, and their assets are held by independent custodians. Your investment can still rise or fall with the markets, so we always explain the risks before you invest.
Will you ever ask me for cash, OTPs or passwords?
Never. We never accept cash and never ask you to pay into a personal account. We will never ask for your OTP, PIN, net-banking or app passwords. If anyone does, do not share them and tell us straight away.
What is KYC and how is it done?
KYC (Know Your Customer) is a one-time identity check required before investing in mutual funds. It uses your PAN, Aadhaar or another address proof and a photograph, and is recorded with a SEBI-registered KYC Registration Agency (KRA). It can usually be completed online.
How can I check your registration?
Our AMFI Registration Number (ARN) is ARN-295056. You can confirm it on the AMFI website using its “Locate a Distributor” search.
Working with us & costs
How are you paid?
We are an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor. We are paid by the mutual fund houses (AMCs) as commission on investments made through us in the regular plans of their schemes. You do not pay us any separate fee. The commission is part of the scheme’s expense ratio, which is shown in the scheme documents.
You can also read our disclosures.
How often will my investments be reviewed?
We suggest a review at least once a year, and whenever something important changes, such as a new job, marriage, a child or a big expense. You can contact us any time between reviews.
Who will I speak to?
You speak directly with Ritesh Kumar, who holds a PGDM in Securities Markets from NISM and NISM certifications. Read more on our About page.
What if I have a complaint?
Please contact us first and we will try to resolve it quickly. If you are not satisfied, you can approach the fund house concerned, then SEBI’s SCORES portal or the SMART ODR platform.
Tax-saving basics
What is an ELSS fund?
An Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS) is an equity mutual fund that qualifies for a tax deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh a year under the old tax regime. It has a three-year lock-in, the shortest among the usual tax-saving options. Being equity-based, its value moves with the markets.
Do tax-saving investments help under the new tax regime?
Most deductions for investments, including ELSS, are not available under the new tax regime. Whether the old or new regime suits you depends on your income and deductions. We can help you compare, but please confirm your choice with a tax professional.
Are mutual fund gains taxed?
Yes. Gains are taxed when you redeem, and the rate depends on the type of fund and how long you held it. Tax rules change from time to time, so check the current rules or speak to a tax professional before you redeem.
These answers are general information, not a recommendation for your situation. Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
