Behind the numbers

How the calculations work

Simple, standard formulas, so you can see exactly where each number comes from. The examples use the calculators’ starting values and an assumed return of 10% a year.

SIP

Each monthly instalment grows at the monthly equivalent of your yearly rate (the rate ÷ 12). Instalments are assumed to be made at the start of each month.

Formula: FV = P × [(1 + i)n − 1] ÷ i × (1 + i)

P = monthly SIP, i = monthly rate, n = number of months

Example: ₹5,000 a month for 10 years is ₹6,00,000 invested. At an assumed 10% a year, the illustration comes to about ₹10.33 Lakh.

Lump sum

The amount you invest once grows at your yearly rate, compounded once a year, for the number of years you choose.

Formula: FV = P × (1 + r)t

P = amount invested, r = yearly rate, t = number of years

Example: ₹1,00,000 invested for 10 years at an assumed 10% a year comes to about ₹2.59 Lakh.

Goal planner

Your goal is first grown by inflation to find its future cost. We then work out the monthly SIP that would reach that amount at your assumed return.

Formula: Future cost = today’s cost × (1 + inflation)years

Monthly SIP = future cost ÷ what ₹1 a month would grow to

Example: A goal costing ₹10.00 Lakh today, 10 years away, at 6% inflation will cost about ₹17.91 Lakh. At an assumed 10% a year, that needs a SIP of about ₹8,670 a month.

Why the return you assume matters

The same SIP of ₹5,000 a month for 10 years (₹6,00,000 invested), at four different assumed returns:

Illustrative value of the same SIP at different assumed returns
Assumed returnIllustrative value
6% a year ₹8.23 Lakh
8% a year ₹9.21 Lakh
10% a year ₹10.33 Lakh
12% a year ₹11.62 Lakh

A small change in the assumed return makes a big difference over long periods. That is why we suggest planning with a cautious rate. Illustrative only, not guaranteed.

What the numbers leave out

  • Real returns are not the same every year. They go up and down, and can be negative in some years. The calculators assume one steady rate.
  • Tax on gains, exit loads and stamp duty are not deducted.
  • SIP and lump sum results are in future rupees. Because of inflation, they will buy less than the same amount would today. Only the goal planner adjusts for inflation.
  • The SIP amount is assumed to stay the same. Increasing it as your income grows would change the result.

Important information

These calculators are for illustration and general education only. The results depend entirely on the assumptions you enter. They do not represent the past or future returns of any mutual fund scheme, and they are not an offer or a recommendation to buy any scheme. Actual returns are not guaranteed. Turn an estimate into a plan you can follow

A calculator tells you roughly how much you may need. A plan shows you how to get there: which types of funds suit your timeline, how much risk is right for you and when to review.

That is where we help. In a free initial consultation, in person, online or by phone, we:

  • Understand your goals, your timeline and the investments you already have
  • Explain suitable mutual fund options for each goal, with their risks and costs
  • Set up SIPs in your own name, with payments going straight to the fund house
  • Review your progress at least once a year, and when your life changes

What return rate should I enter in the calculator?

There is no single right number. Returns depend on the type of fund and on the markets, and they change from year to year. Try a cautious rate as well as a hopeful one, and plan around the cautious result. If your plan still works at a lower rate, it is more likely to hold up in real life.

Are the calculator results guaranteed?

No. The results are illustrations based on the numbers you enter. Mutual fund returns are market-linked, so the actual value of your investment can be higher or lower, and you may get back less than you invested.

Why does the goal planner ask about inflation?

Prices rise over time, so a goal that costs ₹10 lakh today will cost more in future. The goal planner first grows today’s cost by the inflation rate you enter, then works out the monthly SIP needed to reach that higher amount. At 6% inflation, ₹10 lakh today becomes about ₹17.9 lakh in 10 years.

Do the results include tax and charges?

No. The calculators apply the rate you enter and do not deduct tax on gains, exit loads or stamp duty. The SIP and lump sum results are also in future rupees, which will buy less than the same amount today.

How often should I recheck my numbers?

Once a year, and whenever something important changes: a new job, a raise, marriage, a child or a change in your goal. Increasing your SIP as your income grows can make a real difference over long periods.
